Matthew 5:43-48
As the rain falls upon the earth in violent fashion here in the deep south of Louisiana, I am reminded that God causes the rain. He created the earth and everything in it. It is for His good pleasure, not ours. We are merely those tending the garden. Jesus tells us in the passage today that, “God causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.” We often equate the ‘sun’ with good and the ‘rain’ with bad. But, this is not necessarily true. Having been to the middle east recently, I can tell you firsthand how important rain is and how much of a blessing it is when it comes. We must think in terms of what the first recipients of this message would have thought. Rain is a blessing from God. How is it that God would bless both the righteous and the un-righteous? That’s an interesting question and brings much conversation and debate. But, it is the wrong question. The real question is why God would give us any good thing at all.
God is holy and righteous. He could pour out His wrath upon all mankind and would still be just as holy and righteous. He could withhold His blessings of sunshine and rain. He could withhold His blessings of the breath of life. He could have withheld His greatest blessing; the manifestation of Himself in the form of Jesus, His one and only Son. We would yet be powerless over our sin. We would receive for our sinfulness hell, which is just what we deserve. But He didn’t. God blesses us, even when we don’t deserve it.
