The clichés are abundant. There are always plenty of well intentioned people who will provide you optimistic counsel about your uncertain future. The problem is, in the light of reality it seldom stands up under the scrutiny. We squirm at the thought of another being in control of us. Men especially have great difficulty with the idea that we must trust someone else with the very things that are so dear to us. For men especially, our identity comes from our employment. It is a title. It answers the first question people ask upon meeting us, “So, what do you do?” As things are now, with the economy and the unemployment rates being so high, but also for myself and countless others caught in the in between time, I do not have an answer. I would say I am a preacher, but I am not holding that position currently. I would say I am a chaplain, but I am off of active duty status. So, what am I?
I am on a journey. The journey is not my own. I think it is, but truly it is not. I am not on a journey as the Twilight Zone would have me believe, “You are traveling through another dimension, a dimension not only of sight and sound but of mind. A journey into a wondrous land whose boundaries are that of imagination.” Rather, I am on a journey of trust and faith. But, I am not alone. My Lord goes with me. He goes before me, preparing the way. Just as with the Israelites of old, God prepared the way before them in the desert. So also God goes before us who trust Him, into an uncertain future. I am on a journey as ordained by my Lord. Consider Matthew 28:18-20, Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” So the words of the Newsboy’s song has special meaning for me as I write this. From their Greatest Hits album, the song is called “Stay Strong.” The lyrics go, “We’ve come through wilderness and watched, the cloud by day the burning sky into dawn. Have you forgotten who you are? Did you forget whose trip you’re on? Stay strong you are not lost. Come on and fix your eyes ahead. There’s a new dawn to light our day, our day.”
So as the song spoke to me this morning, I hope for all who find themselves on a journey, you will be inspired at the blessing of God through the lyrics of a song and the inspired Word of God. Stay strong. The journey may be long, but you are not alone.
